BEYOND
WORDS
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
What is
Beyond Words Center?
- Beyond Words
Center is a group comprised of psychologists and therapists. We
work with children and their families to help with a wide variety
of issues. Each child is unique so we make every effort to place
your child in a therapy situation which will best meet his/her
needs. Our services include:
- Psychotherapy
and Consultation for individual children and their families
- Psychotherapy
in a small group setting
- Psychological
Testing
- Social
Skills Training, in a small group setting or on an individual
basis
- Interviewing
Skills.
Do you conduct
an initial evaluation prior to treatment?
- We conduct
a specific evaluation of social skills for individuals who are
referred to our Social Skills Training program. The assessment
includes an initial appointment with the parent(s) and child,
input from parents and teachers via questionnaires and a feedback
appointment with parents. This process allows us to determine
appropriate interventions and to develop strategies for remediation.
The assessment includes measures that are generally not part of
standard psychological evaluations.
How do you
organize groups and/or place students?
- Appropriate
placement is very important to us. We strive to place group members
and social skills students with peers of similar age and developmental
level who are dealing with similar issues. The large number of
groups that we run allows us to do this. Not everyone who is struggling
with social skills is appropriately served in a group setting.
We sometimes recommend that a child or adolescent work with an
individual therapist before joining a group.
Who comprises the staff of Beyond Words?
- The staff
of Beyond Words consists of psychologists, licensed professional
counselors, licensed associate professional counselors, master's level counselors, and interns from Argosy
University, Georgia State University, Emory University, and Agnes
Scott College. All clinical work and social skills training is
supervised by Dr. Lisa Heimann and Dr. Jeffrey Jones during weekly
group and individual supervision meetings.
What population do you serve?
- We work
with children, adolescents, and adults with a wide variety of
psychological concerns. We have a great deal of experience and
expertise in working with children with Attention Deficit Disorder,
Nonverbal Learning Disability, and Asperger's Syndrome. Please
note we also serve children with social skills difficulties who
do not have a diagnosed disability.
Do you offer parent training?
- Parent Training
can be arranged on an individual family basis with any member
of our professional staff.
For what ages do you offer group therapy and social skills intervention?
- We offer
Group Therapy sessions for children and adolescents
generally from age 4 through young adulthood.
Are groups separated by gender?
- Generally
groups are comprised of individuals of the same gender. At the
younger and older ends of the age range, we sometimes put boys
and girls together.
At what locations are your services available?
We offer
our services primarily at the following locations:
- Our main
office, near the intersection of I-85 and Clairmont Road (1762-B
Century Blvd., Atlanta, GA 30345).
- Our satellite office is located in the Roswell area at 1115 Upper Hembree Road, Suite C-2, Roswell, Georgia 30076.
Are your interventions research-based?
- Our program
is based, in part, on research in nonverbal communication that
has been conducted by Marshall Duke and Steve Nowicki at Emory
University. We are currently conducting our own research on social
skills difficulties and their remediation in children.
